ABOUT THE CHARITY
Scarborough Flower Fund Homes arose from an idea promoted by the local Rotary Club during the 1960's when, at the time, there was a pressing need for affordable homes for those members of the local community who were single and for various reasons were unable to enjoy a retirement home of their own - often after a lifetime of service to the community.
Funding such a project was a major committment involving much time and effort and the generosity of the townspeople and local benefactors. Donations in place of floral tributes on the occasion of the loss of a loved one were invited and enabled fund raising to grow and provide a real prospect of achieving the objectives of the Charity. A 'flower fund' was being used to provide a lasting and tangible memory to benefit others.
Our first site Flower Garth, Scarborough was bought in 1971 and the first bungalows were opened by The Marquis of Normanby in June 1975. As funds permitted further homes were built until the current number of thirty-six bungalows was reached.
As awareness of the attractions of the homes increased, funding was improved and extended by legacies and inheritance from the estates of local benefactors which enabled a further development of eighteen bungalows to be opened at Flower Garth, Filey in 1986. Much of the funding for this site was provided by the generosity of local businessman Leonard Dale OBE in memory of his late wife Doris.
As both sites prospered, and with the growth in rent and legacies, the Trustees had the confidence to complete a new site in 1997 of fourteen properties at Flower Court, Cayton and for the first time to include a block of flats, built to complement the existing frontage of the street scene in this lovely conservation area.
Shortly afterwards the locally well known former site of Womacks Nurseries at Wheatcoft on the South side of Scarborough was acquired and finally opened as Flower Croft in 2003. This lovely peaceful site has sixteen properties of flats and bungalows, and is where in 2009 the registered office was opened. Our eighty-two residents now have a focal point and can call in or speak to the administrator, Juliet Eames, with any queries or problems they may have.
As to the future, we are looking for another site to develop to meet the demand for our homes with the object of reaching a total of one hundred properties. In the meantime we follow a policy of regular maintenance and improvement of the existing housing so that our residents enjoy a high and modern standard in any of our homes.
